Digital technology
A unique feature of Moving Memory’s work has been the use of digital technology, in both performance and participatory work.
We devised Doris – a special kit comprising projector, screen and lap-top with bespoke software – to use projections to transform spaces, provoke imaginative responses and encourage deeper engagement by participants. Doris can also store and integrate original or found visual and choreographic materials – adding content to participatory projects and performances.
Importantly, using Doris has helped core company members to develop their own facilitation skills and led to our Moving Well Online Learning Resource and accompanying offline training programme for people who want to run their own Moving Well workshops.
The Moving Well Online Learning Resource comprises more than 50 films and over 20 worksheets which can be used by workshop leaders to plan participatory creative movement workshops – especially anyone interested in a collaborative approach, where participants explore together in a playful way – rather than being given a set of instructions. Primarily for older peoples’ groups, there is a wealth of ideas and tips suitable for groups of all abilities and ages.
It also contains plenty of practical information and advice on health and safety matters and how to structure a workshop but – importantly and uniquely – the resource is designed as a “Pick ‘n’ Mix” from which you can take whatever suits you and your group.
Louise White, Director, Dacorum Community Dance reviewed the resources for us and said:
“A fabulous resource! As an experienced facilitator I can really appreciate how user friendly and inspiring Moving Well is… Concise and accessible to use, with real testimony from company members, celebrating their development from nervous participants to full company members and beyond to becoming facilitators themselves. It’s lovely to have dance/movement ideas written down to use but motivating to see footage of the work in practice with suggestions for suitable music. It makes me want to try out every single idea with my groups and to get them to try ideas out for themselves. Moving Well is rooted in good safe practice with consideration for working with all types of people in a wide range of settings. It’s tried and tested and is fail-safe in its method. With its peer led approach it allows everyone to participate, grow, learn, lead, follow and just purely enjoy creating and moving well! I highly recommend this for new and experienced artists/facilitators alike and for those who simply want to bring creative movement into their lives!”
