Shostakovich 8
On 6 October 2024, Sacconi String Quartet came together with Moving Memory’s Dover Groovin Well and Intergen groups to explore what happens when Movers meet Musicians and Shostakovich’s String Quartet no. 8 in C minor, opus 110 as part of the Sacconi Residency weekend at The Grand, Folkestone.
Written in Dresden, 1960, “in memory of the victims of fascism and war”, this exquisite, 20 minute piece of music has an enduring resonance.
In this sharing of work in progress, musicians and dancers moved through a sense of loss, towards resistance, resolution and restoration found within a community of care. The choreography originated from everyday movement and gestures created by the Dover Groovin Well participants.
The performance was filmed by our Associate Artist, Bob Karper, and you can watch documentation on Vimeo of the full performance or filmed highlights.
With many thanks to Dover Town Council who have been staunch supporters of the company and our Groovin Well Dover group – thank you!
